Evelyn Leila Hyams is the younger daughter in a conservative family led by Faraday Claude Gillingwater, who insists that the elder sister Celia Dorothy Mackaill must have her chance at marriage before Evelyn can wed. When Celia, who has no real interest in matrimony, steps in to help Evelyn and her suitor Bobby Anthony Bushell, she concocts a ruse: she pretends to be engaged to Colonel Smith Basil Rathbone while away on a brief vacation, claiming that Smith has sailed to join the British Field Force in Arabia.
