William Austin

William Austin (24 October 1884 – 28 June 1975) was a British character performer whose career spanned the silent era, the golden age of Hollywood, and the early years of television. Born in London, England, Austin began his artistic journey on the London stage, where his distinctive accent, refined bearing, and impeccable timing quickly earned him a reputation as a dependable supporting actor. By the early 1910s he transitioned to the burgeoning film industry, initially appearing in British silent shorts before moving to the United States in the early 1920s. In America, his elegant demeanor and ability to embody aristocratic or genteel roles made him a favorite of directors seeking an authentic British presence, and he soon became a regular fixture in both dramas and comedies. Notably, Austin portrayed the dignified butler Gus in the classic Marx Brothers films A Night at the Opera (1935) and A Day at the Races (1937), performances that cemented his legacy as one of the era’s most memorable on‑screen servants.
