County Hospital 1932

Ollie [Oliver Hardy] finds himself confined to a hospital bed with a broken leg, while William Austin — his hospital roommate — drops by with a not-so-pleasant gift of hard-boiled eggs and nuts. Ollie laments the absence of candy, and the visit quickly devolves into slapstick when Stan Laurel arrives, accidentally tipping a glass of water and triggering a playful battle that ends with Ollie grabbing a bedpan.

The mood shifts when the doctor Billy Gilbert arrives to examine him and delivers the news: Ollie must remain in the hospital for a full two months. In true comic fashion, Stan’s blunders unleash a cascade of mishaps, culminating in the doctor’s perilous encounter with a traction weight and Ollie’s leg still suspended from the ceiling. Enraged by the chaos, the doctor ejects both Ollie and Stan from the ward, clearing the way for a brief moment of renewed isolation for Ollie.

Back in the corridor, Ollie, irritated at the interruption to his peace, demands his clothes as they prepare to depart. Stan’s continued clumsiness wrecks the trousers of Ollie’s roommate and lands him atop a sedative-loaded hypodermic needle, an episode that drags the nurses into the fray. Head Nurse Miss Wallace May Wallace oversees the scene while Nurse Dorothy Layton Dorothy Layton, Nurse Lilyan Irene Lilyan Irene, and Nurse Estelle Ettre Estelle Ettre observe the bedlam with a mix of concern and amusement. The misadventure continues as Stan attempts to drive Ollie home, but the sedative’s effects take hold, sending the car weaving through the streets until a collision between two streetcars leaves their vehicle bent at a 90-degree angle, trapping them in a seemingly endless loop of unwinnable streetwise chaos.
