During a planned week-long camping trip at Cherry Creek, Wally and his friends imagine a grand outdoor escape, framed by the excitement of a boys’ adventure. But Wally’s Father is wary, certain they’ll be back by nightfall and not wander too far from home. In a bid to avoid dragging along the younger ones, Stymie and Wally try to shoo off Spanky and Scotty, arguing that the trip would be tougher for them to survive. Yet the two younger boys hitchhike their way to the site and arrive anyway, shifting the dynamics of the trip and reminding the older kids of their own reluctance to invite them along.

The younger crowd proves they planned ahead, bringing food and sharing it with the bigger kids in one big, bustling group. As evening deepens, the mood darkens too—the older kids grow anxious while the younger ones buzz with excitement, and candles or lamps cast long shadows that mingle with the sounds of thunder and passing storms. The sight of those shadows, amplified by the night, nudges the older kids toward unease, even as the kids around them seem to thrill in the eerie atmosphere.

Eventually, the scene narrows to just Scotty and Spanky left on their own, their lamp bobbing as it is carried under a turtle’s path toward the creek, where the light flickers and dies. Frightened, they pull into their sleeping bags, their legs stretching out as they chase after the others in a hurried, impulsive dream of returning to safety. The night ends with a mix of nerves and laughter, a child’s sense of adventure tempered by the real fear of the dark, and a reminder that the line between fun and worry can blur when the crew is split between the older, wary campers and the bold, restless younger ones.
