Five student nurses begin their first year of training at the fictional London NHS hospital St. Augustine’s, where they share a dormitory and confront the demanding realities of patient care. The group centers on Susan Belinda Lee (reserved and naïve); Pat Delphi Lawrence (older and cynical); Maureen Adrienne Corri (Irish); Ann (a former public school girl); and Liz (from a working-class background). As they grow closer, they bond in the face of the daily challenges of their work and the personal paths they must navigate within a demanding hospital setting.
Susan falls in love with Dr Jim Alcott George Baker. She is tempted to leave nursing to go with him to Canada, a plan that lingers as a possibility. After aiding a patient who tries to end their own life, Susan reevaluates her desires and decides not to leave immediately. Yet a candid talk with the matron, who shares a piece of her own experience, nudges her toward a different choice: she decides she will join Jim in Canada after all.
Pat’s story takes a sharper turn when she stays out all night with one of the doctors, risking immediate dismissal. She reveals that she has been married for a month, a fact that complicates her standing in the eyes of the hospital. Although this is technically against the rules, Susan and the other nurses argue that Pat’s secret marriage might be morally preferable to unmarried nurses sneaking out and engaging in clandestine affairs. The matron shows sympathy but makes clear that the final decision rests with the hospital’s Board of Governors, leaving Pat’s fate—and the group’s future—in unresolved balance.
