In a stark desert, four survivors—the miner Charles West, his wife Claire McDowell, her sister Mary Pickford, and a third woman Dorothy Bernard—begin a grueling, relentless race with death after a brutal mining camp massacre. The group rides a mule bearing their supplies, the man clinging to the animal as heat, isolation, and fear tighten their grip. As the desert* burns around them, the wife and sister scour the wasteland for water, while the miner makes a dangerous, ill‑fated advance toward the other woman, who resists with quiet resolve.

When the wife returns, a moment of violence erupts: she attacks the other woman, and in the scramble to separate the two, the miner dies. Grief grips the survivors, and the wife grows convinced of the other woman’s guilt, her thoughts twisting toward vengeance and murder. A grim, shared fixation takes hold, and the sister becomes complicit in the looming resolve as they push on through the harsh terrain.

The trek takes a sharper turn when an Indian couple and their baby appear, desperately needing water. The man steals a canteen from two sleeping white men, only to be awakened and shot, and the wife of the Indian dies of thirst. Exhausted, the other woman drifts into sleep. The wife contemplates killing her rival, but the sister urges otherwise. The wife looms over the sleeper with an axe in hand, undecided as the moment stretches taut.

Then the infant’s cries cut through the silence. The wife rushes to the baby, finding the child in the arms of the dead mother, and she drops the axe to cradle the fragile life. When the other woman awakens and comes to join them, the wife listens to her pleas and, in a hard‑won moment of mercy, embraces both the sister and the other woman, signaling a fragile, unexpected reconciliation forged in the fire of their ordeal.
