Elizabeth Smart Amber Marshall is a fourteen-year-old from a large and loving Mormon family in Utah. Her father, Ed Dylan Baker Smart, brings in a handyman who calls himself Immanuel Tom Everett to help with a remodeling project. What begins as a routine home improvement soon takes a dark turn when, months later, Immanuel returns and abducts Elizabeth at knifepoint. Her sister, Mary Katherine Hannah Lochner Smart, who is lying in bed beside her, is too terrified to speak up right away, and the family steers through shock and fear in the days that follow.
As Elizabeth disappears, a massive police investigation unfolds, and the Smarts grow frustrated as investigators question whether any family member might be involved. A nationwide search kicks into high gear, turning the case into a media spectacle that grips the public imagination. In the midst of the chaos, a false news report that points to a family member intensifies the Smarts’ distress, and Ed Dylan Baker Smart endures a polygraph test, ultimately passing it as investigators sift through every possible lead. Richard Ricci, who had previously worked for the Smarts before being dismissed for jewelry theft, is arrested for a parole violation and becomes a person of interest in the evolving case, while authorities probe any potential connection to Elizabeth’s disappearance.
Immanuel’s disturbing crime spree continues as he attempts to abduct another relative, a cousin, but the abduction fails. The investigation also uncovers that Ricci suffered an aneurysm and is brain dead, a development that further complicates the search. Throughout this period, Elizabeth’s mother clings to hope as the public focus begins to wane and the police gradually scale back their active pursuit. In a pivotal moment, Mary Katherine realizes that Immanuel was indeed the person who took Elizabeth, but the authorities do not pursue this lead with the urgency it deserves. Ed Dylan Baker Smart later appears on America’s Most Wanted and shares this crucial information with host John Walsh in confidence.
When Walsh discloses the tip on Larry King Live, the Smarts decide to publish a sketch of Immanuel, which eventually points investigators to Brian David Mitchell, the man behind the disguise. The trail leads to San Diego, where Mitchell takes Elizabeth and returns to Salt Lake City with his wife, Wanda Ilene Barzee Hollis McLaren. A chance encounter with law enforcement exposes them, and Elizabeth identifies herself, prompting Mitchell’s arrest and a heartfelt reunion with her family after an agonizing separation.
In the years that follow, Elizabeth resumes school and gradually rebuilds her life, carrying the memory of what happened but moving forward with renewed resilience. The legal aftermath sees both Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Barzee sentenced to aggravated kidnapping, along with charges of sexual assault and burglary. They undergo mental competency evaluations, though no immediate court date is set, leaving a somber reminder of the lasting impact of the ordeal on Elizabeth and her loved ones.
