Amidst the lavish Parisian society of the 1820s, the captivating Duchess of Langeais enjoys manipulating the affections of those around her. He manages to secure a meeting with her by claiming to be her brother, but upon their encounter, she reacts dramatically, exclaiming that he is her lover, leading to his swift expulsion from the convent.
