The show was the first of two CBS specials tied to a 1968 deal with Day’s production company, a contract her husband Martin Melcher negotiated without her knowledge. After his sudden death in April 1968, Day honored the deal, appearing in both specials and later starring in her eponymous sitcom through 1973.
