Her unwavering resolve results in a death sentence by firing squad, but thanks to a brave guard bribed by the Polish resistance, she narrowly escapes execution. Following her release, she spends a brief period visiting her ailing mother before being relocated to a rural farm for safety, where she reunites with Stefan.

Her extraordinary acts of bravery lead to a life of recognition and honor. In later years, Irena marries Stefan and is nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
