The Cool and the Crazy follows Ben Saul, a reform-school graduate who is transferred to a Kansas City high school. Ben Saul, played by Scott Marlowe, brings a restless energy to the classroom, and his spirited pranks quickly catch the eye of a local gang of tough guys. The more he pushes the boundaries with humor and bravado, the more he inspires their admiration, and soon he starts surrounding himself with them by buying them beer, taking them to dances, and handing out small thrills—“kicks”—that slowly pull them toward marijuana. Ben becomes the frontman for a local marijuana ring, maneuvering between charm and danger as he drifts deeper into a world of crime.
