Margaret, a shy, pale middle‑class Englishwoman, is reluctantly engaged to her older, fidgety neighbor Syl. Both still live with their mothers in the dull Croydon suburb. After a vacation in Egypt with her mother’s friend Marie‑Claire, she behaves oddly. Though she despises Syl, she yields to her mother’s push for marriage to satisfy social convention.
