Captain Albert Ebbs, [John Gregson], a seasoned seaman who has spent his entire career with the South Star line, finally receives a temporary command assignment on the ocean liner SS Queen Adelaide, sailing from London to Sydney. This is a step up in prestige, but it also drags him into a social world he hasn’t learned to navigate. On a ship that doubles as a floating social arena, Ebbs must manage far more than weather, navigation, or cargo: he must preside at the captain’s table, host cocktail parties, judge beauty contests, and share dances with the many lady passengers who look to him for etiquette, charm, and a courteous smile.

The voyage brings a parade of social expectations that test his nerve. Amorous widows, young couples eager for a wedding, and a blustering ex-army Major who claims to have the ear of the chairman put Ebbs under a strain he isn’t equipped to handle. To complicate matters, the crew and officers — led by the blunt chief purser — are quietly skimming profits, a scheme Ebbs does not fully realize until near the end of the trip.

The tension simmers until the last night of the voyage, when a champagne service reveals a startling truth: the celebrated drinks are cider, and the crew are pockets full of illicit gains. The plan is exposed, and the ship’s morale teeters on the edge of disaster. Yet, in a classic twist of a maritime comedy, things resolve in a way that keeps Ebbs afloat and his principles intact.

All comes out well — just. In a final turn of luck, Ebbs finds himself engaged to be married to an attractive widow, while the chief officer secures a marriage proposal from a young heiress, and the wayward officers are arrested by Sydney police. The Queen Adelaide returns to harbor with a renewed sense of order and a reminder that leadership on the high sea often rests as much on tact, decency, and steady nerves as on seamanship.
