Eight top-ranked gamers Soxxx_1 (Carl), Mustang67 (Shelly), Da_Chi3f (Edward), Str8 Shoot3r (Andre), xxAtla5xx (Marco), T3rrorist#1 (Zahid), Reap3r_2000 (Adam), and Slay3rGirl (Taylor) are invited to beta test a new virtual reality game with a $100,000 prize. After arriving, they strip down to motion-capture suits, get scanned, and are told to wear VR gear. Zahid, a Bosnian Muslim who chose his username ironically, resists wearing gear that marks him as a terrorist, but Shelly convinces him to play, insisting the label was just a joke.
Once everyone dons the helmets, the office setting dissolves into a brutal, post-apocalyptic war zone. A simulated sergeant explains the mission: Russian terrorists occupy every floor of a tall building, and the group must carve a path to the bottom starting from the 25th floor. Though the others are thrilled, Zahid laments having accepted the invitation, while the others rally around the challenge. The first level serves as a tutorial, with Andre, a former soldier, taking the lead. But the mood shifts quickly when Carl is wounded and reports that the VR suit’s feedback caused real pain. Taylor breaks down, admitting she took her friend’s place, and Shelly vows to protect her.
Suspicion rises when Marco accuses Andre, judging him to be involved in the game’s design. The tension peaks as Andre exits in anger and is shot by a terrorist who has respawned. The group discovers Andre’s body and realizes the helmets are programmed to deliver a lethal shock on the character’s death. Zahid asks Carl to smash his helmet, but it won’t budge. Before they can remove it, the sergeant returns, strikes Zahid, and warns against further tampering. With no other option, they press on to the next level.
Their descent continues as Zahid and Carl try to break a window; the sergeant again appears, breaking Zahid’s leg and warning that the next violation will mean death. Realizing the others cannot carry him to the finish, Zahid stays behind while the others push forward. Taylor becomes separated and hides in a bathroom, yet she fights back, killing a terrorist solo and gaining confidence. On the 9th floor, the sergeant reveals a captive terrorist and orders the players to torture him for a password. Edward volunteers, and after several jolts of electricity, the captive provides a password. Adam uses it to arm a basement bomb with a 30-minute countdown. Marco grows increasingly aggressive toward Adam, blaming him for worsening their situation.
Marco and Adam descend further while Shelly, Carl, Edward, and Taylor continue to clear upper floors. Marco lures Adam into danger, using him as bait, and Adam is killed by terrorists. When the group reaches Adam’s position, Marco kills Taylor to grab a medical kit. Seeing “Atlas” written in Taylor’s blood, Carl attacks Marco and damages his helmet, triggering the sergeant to enter and kill Marco.
Carl, Shelly, and Edward descend to the basement and wipe out four remaining terrorists until a boss with a bipod-mounted machine gun shoots them. Carl sacrifices himself to save Shelly, using their last medical kit on her as his helmet kills him. Edward shoots the machine gunner with a rocket launcher and halts the countdown just before detonation. Shelly hears Edward recite the Sergeant’s victory speech by heart, a telltale sign that he’s the inside man. The graphics shift back to reality and guards enter, tranquilizing Shelly. She awakens earlier than expected to find the others being body-bagged, and Edward reveals she has “won” by handing her a large bag of money. When Shelly threatens to expose Edward’s role in the killings, he dismisses the idea, insisting no one would believe her. She grabs a tranquilizer gun from a guard, injects him, and kills the remaining guards in a firefight before confronting Edward. He offers more money, but she insists that this must never happen again, and she shoots him at point-blank range, walking away with nothing but the truth.
