Barney Snow [Elijah Wood] wakes up in a stark hospital ward with no memory of how he arrived there. He clings to only his name and a few hazy flashes of a car crash, convinced that he is in the hospital to recover from an amnesia and slowly starts to rebuild a sense of self. As he settles into the routine of the youth clinic, he notices a troubling pattern: most of the other residents are not on the path to recovery, but are living with terminal illnesses, a reality that casts a long shadow over his own fragile situation.

Mazzo [Joe Perrino], another patient, asks Barney to host his visiting twin sister Cassie [Rachael Leigh Cook]. Barney is immediately drawn to Cassie, and that spark becomes a powerful incentive to get better, not just for himself but for the chance to see her outside the hospital walls. He grows determined to learn more about his past, hoping that uncovering the truth will help him imagine a future where he and Cassie might belong together.

As he investigates both his shattered memories and the physical corridors of the hospital, Barney begins to suspect that the car crash he remembers may not have happened at all. The more he probes, the more it feels like a carefully constructed veil over another, deeper reality.

The truth comes to light when Doctor Harriman [Janeane Garofalo] reveals that the amnesia was not an accident. She explains that he underwent an experimental procedure designed to test whether the mind can influence the body’s fight against cancer. The idea, she says, is that erasing the memory of the disease might alter the body’s behavior, potentially slowing or stopping cancer growth. Barney had volunteered for the treatment, clinging to the hope of a miracle cure.

Her explanation draws on a lingering myth: an old belief that, based on weight and wing power, the bumblebee should be unable to fly, yet it flies anyway because it does not know its limits. The doctor uses this metaphor to illustrate the mind’s stubborn power and its possible impact on physical health, a concept that gives Barney a glimmer of possibility—even as it deepens the ethical and personal stakes of his choice.

Now torn between the possibility of healing and the budding connection he shares with Cassie, Barney stands at a crossroads. He must decide whether to undergo the amnesia procedure again, risking another erasure of his memories and his feelings, or to remain with the knowledge he has gained and pursue a future with Cassie, hopeful but uncertain about what that future might hold.
