Nate Wilcox, Nate Bargatze, is thriving as the top performer at a busy car dealership. His wife, Katie Wilcox, Mandy Moore, stays home with their three daughters—Gracie Wilcox, Hadley Wilcox, and Sam Wilcox. Katie’s inventive idea, the Star Minder, earns her a deal on Shark Tank that could transform their family’s finances and future. To get the product off the ground, she must travel to South Korea for two weeks, forcing Nate to take a leave from his job and learn the challenging art of staying home with the kids.

Nate quickly realizes the challenges of domestic life: cooking, cleaning, laundry, and the constant needs of three lively daughters. Along the way, he befriends Martin Herlihy as Peter, the friendly delivery driver, and Will Forte as Keegan Jones, a contractor who proves to be more clumsy than competent. A fellow stay-at-home dad, Colin Jost as Conor Ashford, makes a few earnest attempts to connect, only to be curtly rebuffed at first. When Nate asks his mother for help, the arrival of his father, Brett Cullen, brings a different energy—quietly drifting, often asleep, and sometimes leaving a mess in his wake.

Relief comes when Katie returns briefly, but the joy is tempered by news that the Star Minder’s production schedule has been rushed forward, sending Katie off again to San Francisco for another two weeks. Yet the balance remains fragile. A conflict arises when Nate tries to attend Hadley’s spelling bee and an important work event at the same time, leaving him torn between family and career. Things take a wild turn when Keegan’s horse dies and Nate, in a rush, attempts to move the animal’s body. He does not realize that horses sleep standing up, and the startled creature bolts through the house, wrecking walls and furniture before disappearing into the night. Katie’s livestream for Star Minder becomes the centerpiece of the escalating mess. She announces a session in their living room, which is now in shambles. Desperate to salvage the moment, Nate asks Conor if he can borrow his house for the broadcast, apologizing for the past distance and vowing to mend their friendship. Gracie, Hadley, Sam, Walter, Peter, and Keegan pull together to recreate the Ashford family home in front of the camera, steering Katie and her funder toward the guest house they’ve converted to resemble the Wilcox home. The ruse is exposed when Conor’s wife and child arrive during the stream. Despite the chaos, Nate publicly apologizes to Katie and expresses sincere admiration for how she has shouldered the family’s responsibilities. The livestream ends up drawing impressive attention from viewers, due in part to the high-energy drama and the heartfelt moment of reconciliation.

By the film’s end, a new equilibrium emerges.
