Choi Chang-hyuk is behind the wheel, and the sudden appearance of police lights in his rearview mirror sets off a tense pursuit. In the heat of the chase, he fights to shake off his pursuers, and when his car barrels out of a tunnel and plunges over a cliff, the wreck bursts into flames. The motive behind his desperate bid to flee traces back to a colossal scam he pulled at the Bank of Korea, a scheme he carried out with four accomplices that yielded a staggering sum of US$5 billion won. Yet the fallout is brutal: one partner is caught, the other three vanish, and with them, so does the money.
[Eol-mae] lies at the center of the police inquiry after the crash, the man who is captured and pressed to spill the beans about the operation and its other participants. Through stark flashbacks, the film lays bare how the plan took shape and slowly introduces the circle of suspects who were drawn into it, offering a closer look at the tangled loyalties and shifting motives that fueled the deception.
The investigators dig deeper into Chang-hyeok’s fate and uncover his brother, the owner of a used-book store, a man who has been at odds with the deceased. Yet despite that rift, a large life insurance payout lands in the brother’s hands, drawing renewed scrutiny and suspicion. This development catches the eye of Seo In-kyung, who has been living with Master Kim, a veteran con artist and the mastermind behind the entire scam. In-kyung becomes determined to learn more about Chang-hyeok and, crucially, about his brother, as the pieces of the puzzle begin to tighten around the truth.
As the story unfolds, a chorus of investigators and con artists works against a backdrop of mounting tension. The film tracks the efforts of the police, including Detective Park and Detective Kim, who sift through a web of connections that tangles money, motive, and memory. The underworld looms large through figures such as Gasoline and Jo Kyung-ran, while the sly presence of Big Mouth hints at the kinds of pressure and double-cross that always hover near a scheme this massive. Even the elusive Swallow offers a reminder of how many players can slip in and out of trust, with Swallow weaving through the corners of the drama.
Throughout, the narrative keeps a steady, exam-like focus on greed, deception, and consequence, guiding the viewer through a labyrinth of motives without losing sight of the human costs. The pacing blends sharp investigative beats with the slow burn of flashbacks, painting a picture of a carefully built con that collapses under its own weight. By staying true to the core events—the bank heist, the capture and disappearance of key players, the money that vanishes, and the fragile threads connecting family, loyalty, and crime—the film sustains a careful, neutral mood that invites reflection on what people are willing to risk for wealth, and what they stand to lose when every lock clicks in place.
