The film opens with a black-and-white prologue titled The Leader’s Secret, a sly spoof of Soviet-era cinema set in Petrograd in 1918. In a vast, silent building, a lone soldier wanders asking for hot water, until he meets Vladimir Lenin. The scene shifts into a grand hall that suddenly becomes a stage for the uncanny: Lenin transforms into a winged, werewolf-like creature during a full moon and devours the soldier. When the creature vanishes, Lenin is seen again, smoking by a window and cryptically muttering, > How many soldiers have I trapped with hot water! The sequence closes as two soldiers outside hear the wolf’s howl and whisper that Lenin has devoured someone again. This surreal short is the work of Maxim Utyosov, an underappreciated amateur director.

Back in the main storyline, the Russian Film Academy is hosting a prestigious “Best Russian Film” competition, with acclaimed titles such as Admiral, Black Lightning, and Taras Bulba. The tapes—the only copies—are locked away in a safe before the awards ceremony. Viktor Palych, Aleksandr Baluev, head of a major illegal film-copying operation, bribes the event’s organizer, Eduard Rykov, Valentin Smirnitskiy, to obtain the tapes for piracy. Max and his friend Sania, Pyotr Vins, are tasked with delivering them. Yet a cascade of chaotic events leads to a car explosion that destroys the tapes, leaving the two filmmakers and an amnesiac girl on the run. They are suddenly hunted by video pirates who crave the footage for themselves.

With time running out, the trio must reconstruct the lost films in just three days. They rally help from friends and family, cobbling together makeshift versions that are quaintly rough but filled with stubborn creativity. As the festival day arrives, these improvised copies fail to impress the critics, but the trio’s effort reaches its own kind of triumph. Max’s own amateur film, The Leader’s Secret, unexpectedly wins the grand prize, turning the competition on its head and offering a sly meditation on piracy, memory, and the imperfect but enduring magic of cinema.
