The Beast of Yucca Flats 1961

In Yucca Flats, Nevada, Joseph Javorsky—a Soviet scientist who defects from the USSR—arrives in America carrying a briefcase packed with military secrets, including information on the Soviet Moon landing. Javorsky and his American contacts are suddenly attacked by a pair of KGB assassins, who kill Javorsky’s associates and bodyguards. Javorsky flees into the desert, trudging across vast, sunbaked stretches and eventually discarding much of his clothing to cope with the searing heat.

Presently, the radiation from a nearby nuclear weapons test mutates the bewildered Russian into a mindless beast with an uncontrollable urge to kill. He stalks a road and murders a couple in their car, drawing the immediate attention of two pursuing police officers, Jim Archer and Joe Dobson, who race after him through the barren landscape. The desert becomes a stage for a tense cat-and-mouse chase, where the line between hunter and hunted blurs under the harsh sun and sudden bursts of violence.

Meanwhile, a vacationing family travels along the same road, the kind of ordinary travelers who would never expect to be pulled into a grim nightmare. After they stop at a service station, the family’s two young sons stray into the surrounding desert, where they unexpectedly come face to face with the mutated Javorsky and manage to escape his blurry, frantic pursuit. The father hurries after them, frantic and determined, only to become entangled in the officers’ search from the air, as one of the aircraft-mounted watchers mistakes him for the killer.

From the sky, the officer trains a high-powered rifle on the innocent man, and the father is shot at, narrowly escaping capture. The chaos of pursuit and misidentification underscores the film’s bleak, unforgiving mood, as the family is eventually reunited and the law closes in on Javorsky. In his final moments, weakened and bleeding, he reaches out with a desperate tenderness toward a curious jackrabbit before he dies.
