Defection to America with secret briefcase

Joseph Javorsky defects from the USSR and arrives in America with a briefcase full of military secrets, including data about the Soviet Moon landing. His arrival immediately draws attention from both American contacts and KGB operatives who want the briefcase back.

KGB assassins strike, killing Javorsky's associates

A pair of KGB assassins ambush Javorsky's group, killing his American contacts and bodyguards. Javorsky manages to flee, but the attack leaves him isolated and pursued.

Flees into the desert and sheds clothing

Chased by his pursuers, Javorsky flees into the desert on foot and traverses a long distance. In the intense heat, he discards much of his clothing to stay cool, becoming more exposed as a result.

Nuclear test mutates Javorsky into a killer

Radiation from a nearby nuclear weapons test mutates Javorsky into a mindless beast with an uncontrollable urge to kill. The transformation marks a brutal shift from scientist to predatory threat.

First murder on the road

In his mutated state, Javorsky stalks and murders a couple in their car on a remote road. The grisly act triggers a wider manhunt as authorities scramble to locate the killer.

Police pursue the mutant

Police officers Jim Archer and Joe Dobson pursue the mutant along the desert road, coordinating with aerial surveillance to track the killer. The chase intensifies as the creature evades capture.

Vacationing family enters the danger zone

A vacationing family travels the same road and becomes embroiled in the pursuit. The two young sons wander off into the surrounding desert, where they encounter the mutated Javorsky and manage to escape.

Children escape from the killer

The two boys escape from the mutated Javorsky, providing a brief moment of relief for their family and the pursuing officers. Their escape heightens the urgency to secure the children.

Father hunted, mistaken for killer

The father searches for his sons but is mistaken for the killer by one of the police officers. An aerial search in a light aircraft leads to the officer opening fire on the innocent man.
