The Bears and I 1974

Robert (Bob) Leslie, a Vietnam veteran, travels to the remote homeland of a fallen comrade to deliver his personal effects to his father, Chief Peter A-Tas-Ka-Nay, a First Nations chief and shaman. He is drawn to the striking beauty of the west and chooses to stay awhile to find a new sense of purpose among the mountains, rivers, and ancestral lands that surround him.

He soon discovers three orphaned cubs and begins to raise them, hoping to teach them how to survive on their own. Yet as the cubs grow dependent on his care, a deep bond forms between them and Bob, making his mission to release them back into the wild feel increasingly difficult and personal.

Meanwhile, the indigenous population faces eviction by the federal government, which plans to build facilities within the part of the national park where they live. Bob makes several earnest attempts to speak on their behalf to the park board, but his limited understanding of Native history and culture creates friction with his friends and allies. Some members express clear frustration, while others resist the authorities’ plans with quiet, and sometimes vocal, threats of violence, underscoring a landscape where political aims clash with lived histories.

As tensions rise, one man’s anger targets Bob’s home and the bears, triggering a forest fire that endangers the park and everything within it—humans, bears, and the wider ecosystem alike. The crisis tests Bob’s loyalties and his sense of responsibility, as he witnesses the precarious balance between compassion for the bears and the harsh realities of protecting both people and wildlife from escalating danger.

Gradually, Bob comes to understand the wisdom of the Chief and the broader danger facing the bears. Realizing that attachment can threaten the very beings he sought to protect, he makes the hard choice to push the cubs away, aiming to secure their future in the wild even as his own heart hesitates. In this contemplative blend of wilderness, duty, and cultural collision, the story portrays a subtle, human look at how one man navigates loyalty, reverence for Indigenous voices, and the imperative of letting nature take its course.
