On Baron Anteo Pellacani’s estate, a centuries‑old fig tree is worshipped as the site of a saint’s martyrdom. The Baron, crippled by a fig‑tree accident, becomes a bitter atheist and vows to fell it. He mistakes a beautiful prostitute lying on the trunk for the saint, falls in love, and his relatives, the clergy and her pimp all try to exploit his sudden, misguided devotion.
