Jane Callahan, a striking American woman, writes to her son, a cadet at a renowned military academy, about a long-guarded secret from her past.
Twenty years earlier she travels to Russia to aid Douglas McCracken, an obsessive engineer who seeks the patronage of Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich to fund his ambitious invention—a colossal machine designed to harvest the Siberian forests.
On her journey, she meets two men who will shape her life: a handsome young cadet Andrei Tolstoy, who shares a passion for opera, and the imposing General Radlov, who is captivated by her beauty and longs to marry her.
