Morris Mishkin is a poor Jewish tailor living with mounting hardships that press him to the edge. His back pain makes steady work nearly impossible, his daughter has run away, and his wife, Fanny Mishkin, battles heart disease. With welfare relief still backlogged, he spends his last savings on groceries, hoping to keep a fragile thread of life intact. On his way to the store, he witnesses a robbery: a Black man snatches a fur coat and, when Mishkin yells for help, the thief bolts away but is struck and killed by a passing car. Returning home, Mishkin finds his wife’s condition worsening, and his frustration boils over as he curses the Lord for his misfortunes.

In the modest hush of his kitchen, the dead thief materializes again, revealing himself as more than a vision — a figure who claims to be a Jewish angel in training, calling himself Alexander Levine. Levine insists that a miracle must occur within 24 hours to earn his official status among angels. At first, Mishkin remains skeptical, doubting whether anything divine is at work. Yet, as if to test his faith, his wife’s health suddenly improves. The change feels real, but Mishkin cannot fully credit it as mercy or miracle, clinging to doubt even as the moment passes. When Levine’s 24 hours expire, he departs from the Mishkin home, and Fanny’s condition slides back toward danger. The encounter leaves Mishkin with a renewed urgency and a moral ache to believe, sparking a desperate knee-jerk rush into Harlem’s streets in search of the enigmatic figure.

The chase leads him to a local synagogue, a place that might reconcile his doubts, yet what he finds is a solitary black feather rather than clear proof. The feather becomes a haunting emblem of faith’s ambiguity, a sign that won’t easily resolve the struggle between despair and grace. As Mishkin faces the unanswered questions of mercy and providence, the story lingers on the delicate balance between human endurance and the possibility that a higher mercy might be at work, even when it arrives in the most inexplicable forms.
