Jack, portrayed by George Clooney, is a gunsmith and contract killer who finds solace in a remote cabin in Sweden with his lover Ingrid. Their quiet retreat shatters when Jack discovers a single set of footprints in the snow, triggering his instincts just as sniper shots ring out. In a rushed bid for safety, Jack pulls out his weapon to combat the unseen threat, but the encounter leaves Ingrid, played by Irina Björklund, in a state of shock. As Jack coolly disarms the sniper, he must grapple with more than just their immediate danger; Ingrid’s confusion mounts when she sees him rifling through the assailant’s belongings for clues about the attack. Realizing that his true identity could be exposed, Jack makes a heart-wrenching decision—he shoots Ingrid in the back as she attempts to escape, sealing her fate.
Fleeing to Rome afterward, he contacts his handler Pavel, played by Johan Leysen. Pavel advises that Jack should leave the city and find refuge in Castelvecchio, warning him, “Don’t make any friends, Jack.” However, haunted by the tragedy in Sweden, Jack, now living under the alias Edward, relocates to Abruzzo. Disguising himself as a photographer, he takes on a new assignment that involves constructing a sniper rifle for a mysterious client named Mathilde, portrayed by Thekla Reuten. Meanwhile, he begins an emotional entanglement with Clara, played by Violante Placido, who also offers her services as a prostitute.
As Jack immerses himself in his work, his craftsmanship shines through in the custom equipment he builds, showcasing his meticulous nature. However, his past does not let him go easily; he senses someone tracking him down, ultimately confronting and eliminating a second assassin sent from Sweden. The weight of his previous actions manifests in tormenting dreams and questions about his choices in life—particularly after an impactful conversation with Father Benedetto, played by Paolo Bonacelli, who remarks that Jack lives in “a place without love.”
Caught between his duties and burgeoning feelings for Clara, Jack now faces paranoia that threatens to engulf him completely. His fear escalates when he discovers a gun hidden in Clara’s bag or, perhaps, just a sense of unease surges through him as he grapples with what lies ahead. Nonetheless, amid rising tensions with Mathilde and the looming threat of being discovered, Jack finds a chance for a new beginning—an escape with Clara. Their love grows deeper as the stakes rise, with the connection they share serving as a beacon of hope in his bleak world.
In a final act of defiance, Jack decides to modify the weapon he was to deliver to Mathilde, setting up a confrontation where he narrowly escapes an assassination attempt from her. However, the chaos continues as Clara seeks him out in a bustling crowd, and it becomes painfully clear to Jack that his life as an assassin cannot coexist with love. Tragically, the past catches up with him as he encounters Pavel, leading to a life-altering shootout.
In a gripping climax, Jack discovers he has been shot himself while racing to meet Clara at a picturesque riverside spot—a location filled with memories of their joyful times. As he struggles to reach her, fate intervenes, reminding us that love often exists in the fleeting moments of beauty, like the white, endangered butterfly that soars into the sky, symbolizing the fragility of life as darkness encroaches.
