Six friends embark on a wild journey to achieve fame and fortune by creating the most innocent adult film ever conceived. Despite their utter lack of experience and direction, they remain steadfast in their commitment to this quirky project, facing numerous challenges along the way.

Once the crew completes their film, they gather nervously at a local bar for its inaugural screening. Just as tension rises, the situation takes a turn for the chaotic when the brother of a girl whose scene was ultimately cut—save for a few fleeting glimpses of her face—bursts into the bar. Fueled by anger, he seizes the reel from the projector, drenches it in whiskey, and ignites it, leading to a shocking moment as the only copy of their work goes up in flames.

In a surprising twist, all seems lost, but the dedicated cinematographer, who had been documenting the entire filmmaking process on mini DV tapes, comes to the rescue. He skillfully edits these recordings to create an innocent documentary that chronicles the ups and downs of their makings, cleverly excising all elements of nudity and explicit scenes. This new version eventually premieres as The Amateurs, ultimately capturing the hearts of critics and audiences alike on the independent film circuit, proving that sometimes, the journey is just as important, if not more so, than the destination.
