In a quiet Transylvanian village, a local police constable frames Johann Moritz, Anthony Quinn, on charges of being Jewish after Moritz’s wife Suzanna Moritz, Virna Lisi, refuses the constable’s advances. Moritz is sent to a Romanian concentration camp as a Jew, where he is known as Jacob Moritz, and the brutal, bureaucratic machinery of the time begins to shape his fate. He escapes to Hungary with a small group of Jewish prisoners, only to be imprisoned again for being citizens of Romania, enemies in a shifting war. Hungarian authorities hand them over to German forces to satisfy labor demands, and an SS officer designates him as an Aryan German-Romanian, freeing him from the camp and forcing him to join the Waffen-SS. After the war, Moritz is brutally beaten by Soviet troops for his Waffen-SS past, then arrested and prosecuted as a war criminal by American authorities. Ultimately he is released and hopes to rebuild his life with his wife and sons in occupied Germany. The film, based on Constantin Virgil Gheorghiu’s novel, places its tragedy within a larger historical frame: Hungary’s alliance with Nazi Germany, the 1940 cession of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina to the Soviet Union, and the tumultuous upheavals that followed across Central Europe during and after World War II.
