Twenty-five years have passed since Fillmore High’s 1957 basketball team captured the Pennsylvania state championship. The coach and four of the victors — George Sitkowski, James Daley, Tom Daley, and Phil Romano — gather to relive that glory and to see whether their old camaraderie can endure under the pressures of adulthood.
As teenagers, they could read each other’s moves on the court without fail. Now, as middle-aged men, each is grappling with mid-life crisis. George Sitkowski, the mayor of Scranton, is in the thick of a fierce re-election campaign. James Daley is an overwrought and underpaid school principal, while Tom Daley has become a drifter with a serious drinking problem. Phil Romano stands as the wealthiest among them, often bending the law and even betraying a friend to indulge his own needs, but George badly needs his support.
The intended celebratory nature of this reunion quickly dissipates as tensions rise. Contentions emerge among the four old teammates, who begin to turn on one another. The coach’s bigotry—then and now—and his selfish disregard for fair play are brought again to the surface, testing the limits of loyalty. The absence of the team’s star player, who hates the coach, serves to underscore the futility and hollowness of this gathering.
