Thankam delivers a compelling crime drama anchored by strong performances and an authentic visual style. The screenplay sustains tension through a measured first half before slowing in the latter half, and the climax leaves some viewers unsatisfied. Production values, including cinematography and sound design, support the gritty atmosphere, while the thematic focus on ordinary lives adds depth. Overall, the film offers a solid, if imperfect, viewing experience that rewards attentive audiences.
The Movie Echo Score Breakdown for Thankam
Art & Craft
The film’s direction and visual craft show confidence, with effective use of locations and a restrained color palette that reinforces the gritty tone. Cinematography by Gautham Sankar and editing by Kiran Das are noted for serving the narrative without excess. While a few reviewers cite a slow start, the overall technical execution is regarded as competent and enhances the storytelling.
Character & Emotion
Performances across the ensemble are largely praised, especially Girish Kulkarni’s nuanced police officer and Biju Menon’s grounded protagonist. Vineeth’s portrayal of Kannan receives consistent commendation, and the chemistry among the main cast adds realism. Aparna Balamurali’s limited screen time is noted as under‑written, but the collective acting strength compensates for this shortfall.
Story & Flow
The narrative builds intrigue through a layered investigation and a series of revelations that keep viewers engaged early on. Pacing concerns emerge in the second half, with some critics describing the plot as predictable and the climax as abrupt. Nonetheless, the core mystery and its thematic concerns resonate, delivering a largely satisfying, if uneven, story arc.
Sensory Experience
Bijibal’s score and Ganesh Marar’s sound design receive commendation for reinforcing tension and ambience, though occasional jarring moments are mentioned. Visual composition aligns with the film’s realistic aesthetic, and language diversity is handled organically. The sensory components collectively support the film’s atmospheric goals without overwhelming the narrative.
Rewatch Factor
Many reviewers recommend a repeat viewing for its suspenseful moments and character nuances, noting that the film remains engaging on subsequent watches. The abrupt ending and pacing inconsistencies dampen rewatch enthusiasm for some, but the strong performances and thematic depth encourage viewers to return for further analysis.

Who are the two gold brokers from Thrissur?
Read the complete plot summary of Thankam, including all major events, twists, and the full ending explained in detail. Explore key characters, themes, hidden meanings, and everything you need to understand the story from beginning to end.
From Thrissur, the Gold Capital of India, Muthu and Kannan are seasoned gold brokers whose journey takes them from the bustling streets of their home city to the moneyed hubs of Mumbai as they chase deals and a fragile future.
On one of these trips, the mood shifts when Kannan goes missing and is eventually found dead in a hotel room. The police soon arrive, and the investigation is led by Girish Kulkarni as Inspector Jayant Sakhalkar, who presses for answers about what happened behind the door and beneath the chaos of the room. The initial findings paint a grim scene: the room was locked from the outside with a separate lock, a mess of belongings scattered around, and Kannan hanging from a ceiling fan with a pool of blood on the floor. The formal postmortem adds a troubling detail—there were wounds on his body that suggest foul play, while the return of 8 kg of gold that was supposedly in Kannan’s possession is conspicuously missing.
As the inquiry deepens, a startling truth begins to surface: Kannan had hatched a plan to stage his own murder because debt had closed in on him. He confided this plan to Arul, while Abbas was instructed to create confusion in the hotel room, injure Kannan, and take a portion of the gold before leaving him bound and alone, with the door locked from outside. After Abbas carries out his portion of the plan and departs, Kannan supposedly frees himself and ends up hanging himself. It turns out the supposed 8 kg of gold was not in his hands; he had only 2 kg, which he passed to Abbas as part of the ruse. The motive behind this ruse was to project murder rather than suicide, in hopes that creditors would spare Kannan’s family and his partner Muthu.
Yet across the hotel threshold, Jayant’s doubts linger. The absence of a genuine crime scene rattle, the quiet hotel staff, and the lack of any sound of an attack all raise questions. The detective’s suspicions deepen as he notes fingerprints and a bloodstain pattern on the switchboard and the fan, yet the larger truth remains elusive until Abbas is confronted with questions. He reveals that Kannan had entrusted him to relay a message to Keerthy, and he hands over a gold locket that Kannan always wore, a keepsake meant for her.
Back in Thrissur, Muthu wrestles with the revelation that his close friend hid immense pain behind a veneer of business success. He contemplates pushing the case toward murder rather than suicide, partly out of loyalty to Kannan’s family and partly to shield himself from the relentless pressure of debt collectors. Keerthy, disillusioned by the turn of events, finally places Kannan’s gold locket in a temple hundial, hoping for some spiritual solace amid the storm. The group’s return to their home city is shaded by heavy heartache and a suite of internal struggles as they try to reconcile truth with memory, and the film closes on a note that underscores the personal cost of a gambit born out of despair.
