What is the main character Il‑chul's original career aspiration before becoming a gambler?
Read the complete plot summary of Tazza: One Eyed Jack, including all major events, twists, and the full ending explained in detail. Explore key characters, themes, hidden meanings, and everything you need to understand the story from beginning to end.
Do Il-chul, a civil service exam student, is more drawn to gambling than to textbooks, drifting through smoky poker halls rather than crowded libraries. In one such hall he meets a mysterious woman named Madonna, who quickly dismisses his dream of becoming a professional gambler. Il-chul presses on, insisting he’s a rising tazza, but she strides away before he can persuade her, leaving a lingering sense of unfinished business.
Not long after, he sees Madonna again—this time in a car that smashes into his bicycle. Desperate for compensation, he wagers a high-stakes poker match against the car’s owner, only to lose badly and tumble deeper into debt. The pressure tightens as loan sharks close in, until a mysterious gambler known as “One-Eyed Jack” intervenes, paying off the debt and claiming he owed a favor to Il-chul’s late father, Jjak-gwi.
Driven by a hunger to become a true tazza, Il-chul agrees to let Jack take him under his wing, on the condition that he can win at roulette. After a hard-won victory, he joins Jack’s team of gamblers—among them Young-mi, Kka-chi, and Mr. Kwon—to target a wealthy man known as Mr. Mool and pull off a calculated scam. The plan pulses with the promise of easy money, but its backdrop is a dangerous underworld where trust is a fragile currency.
As Il-chul’s crew edges closer to their prize, a personal reunion complicates everything: Madonna returns, now linked to Mool, insisting that her husband is dead and that she has sunk everything she owns into Mool’s ventures. Il-chul cautions her to pull out, and the pair share a charged night that turns out to be a trap. Mool’s enforcers beat Il-chul, and the rest of the team is pressed to the brink. In a moment of sacrifice, Kka-chi gives his life to help Young-mi and Mr. Kwon escape the tightening noose.
The tale’s tide shifts again when Jack intervenes to save Il-chul and reveals a painful truth: he once betrayed Il-chul’s father, Jjak-gwi. Jack’s confession ushers in a brutal escalation as he confronts Ma-gwi, a ruthless opponent, and loses his life in the process. Traumatized and adrift, Il-chul becomes a drifting gambler until a maimed Kka-chi reappears with the grim news of Jack’s death. Fueled by a desire for vengeance, Il-chul vows to settle the score and challenges Ma-gwi to one final, decisive game.
Madonna, whose alliance with Ma-gwi and Mool has come to light, seeks a deal with Il-chul, only to discover the deceit has already been orchestrated against her. In the climactic match, Ma-gwi falls into Il-chul’s trap and loses, but the revelation comes too late: Madonna’s betrayals are laid bare, and Ma-gwi is dragged to a fish farm where she exacts her own grim revenge for her brother’s murder, severing his arm before watching him drown. Though Madonna earns nothing material, she discovers a sense of closure as she walks away from the wreckage of the scheme.
Back at the center of it all, Il-chul’s wit and nerve prove decisive. He splits the winnings with Mool as promised, but the deeper plan was always survival: Mool attempts to kill him to keep the money. Il-chul had anticipated the treachery and bribed Mool’s driver, who turns on Mool and kills him instead. When Il-chul offers the driver more money, the driver declines, asserting that a true gambler knows when to walk away.
With the immediate danger behind him, Il-chul shares his winnings with his old teammates and returns to his studies, ultimately passing the civil service exam and becoming a government employee. In the post-credits scene, the lure of the game resurfaces as his colleagues pull him into another poker match, leaving him caught between the discipline of a new career and the pull of a lifelong addiction.
