A drop of sunlight falls from the sky and gives birth to a magical flower with the power to heal. For generations, the enigmatic figure known as Gothel uses this flower’s magic to stay young, guarding it carefully. When soldiers from the kingdom of Corona seize the flower, they use it to save their ailing, pregnant queen, and a baby named Rapunzel is born with hair that carries the flower’s healing magic. Yet Gothel, cunning and protective, slips into the castle, cuts a lock of Rapunzel’s hair, and discovers that the magic is tied to the girl herself—the moment the strand is severed, the magic vanishes. Fuelled by fear and ambition, Gothel abducts Rapunzel and raises her in a hidden tower deep in the woods, keeping Rapunzel’s power under her own control while the king and queen continue to send sky lanterns each year on Rapunzel’s birthday, hoping the glowing lights will guide their daughter home.

From her secluded perch, Rapunzel becomes enchanted by the annual lanterns that float into the night, imagining what life beyond the tower might be like. On her eighteenth birthday, she pleads to leave the tower and explore the world she’s only seen in her paintings and dreams, but Gothel insists the outside world is dangerous and unkind. Meanwhile, a skilled thief named Flynn Rider steals a crown from the palace, only to be pursued by the royal guard and the impending arrival of Maximus, the determined horse who serves as a steadfast hunter of criminals. Flynn stumbles upon Rapunzel at the tower and, after a skirmish, ends up hiding inside. Rapunzel, curious and bold, traps him, and after Gothel scolds Rapunzel for speaking about the lanterns, Rapunzel hatches a plan, secretly requesting a gift that will push her toward her goal—new paint as a birthday present—so she can present herself as ready for an excursion that could lead her to the lights.

Rapunzel and Flynn strike a fragile bargain: she will help him recover a stolen crown in exchange for taking her to see the lantern-lit skies. For the first time in her life, Rapunzel steps outdoors, feeling a rush of exhilaration and guilt in equal measure as the world opens up around her. They visit the pub of the Snuggly Duckling, where a crew of rough-looking locals would ordinarily trap an outsider, but Rapunzel’s warmth and charm coax them into revealing their softer sides. When danger rises as royal guards close in, those unlikely allies reluctantly provide help, guiding Rapunzel and Flynn toward safety as a fast-flooding cave threatens to seal their fate. In the oppressive gloom, Flynn reveals his true name, Eugene Fitzherbert, and Rapunzel uses the glow of her hair to unveil a hidden underwater exit, allowing them to escape.

Back at the tower, Gothel returns to an empty room and finds the satchel with the crown and a wanted poster of Eugene. Inspired by the discovery, she locates the Stabbington brothers and makes a deal with them to locate Rapunzel. That night, Gothel confronts Rapunzel in private, returns the satchel, and tests Rapunzel’s loyalty by sending her to find Eugene and bring him to the tower. The next day, Maximus tracks down Eugene and orders his arrest, but Rapunzel persuades them to form a temporary truce so they can continue their journey toward the lanterns.

Together, Rapunzel and Eugene enter the kingdom and join a festival celebrating the “lost princess.” After a day of merriment, they sail onto a lake to watch the lanterns rise into the night. Rapunzel hands over the crown to Eugene, and the two confess their growing love for one another. Seeing the Stabbington brothers on shore, Eugene steps away to make amends and offers them the crown, but the brothers trap him and threaten Rapunzel, attempting to seize her. Gothel arrives, stages a dramatic rescue by knocking the brothers unconscious, and drags Rapunzel back to the tower.

Eugene is briefly arrested, but with the help of Maximus and the pub’s rough crowd, he stages an escape. Meanwhile, Rapunzel uncovers a deeper truth: the kingdom’s emblem—a radiant sun—has silently woven itself into her life’s artwork, revealing that she is the “lost princess” Corona has long sought. This awakening fuels a fierce confrontation with Gothel. Eugene arrives at the tower, but Gothel fatally wounds him with a dagger, intending to flee with Rapunzel. Rapunzel resists, and a desperate choice arises: stay with Gothel to heal Eugene or free herself from captivity. In a pivotal moment, Eugene, realizing Rapunzel’s life would be spent in bondage if she remained with Gothel, asks Rapunzel for one last act of courage and love. He is saved when Rapunzel’s tears—still carrying the flower’s magic—heal him, reviving him.

The lovers return to Corona, where Rapunzel is joyfully reunited with her birth parents, and Eugene is pardoned for his previous transgressions. The kingdom celebrates their return, and Rapunzel and Eugene eventually marry, beginning a new chapter where the magic of the flower, the strength of their bond, and the hope of a bright future finally illuminate their world.
