Virgil Sweet is a veteran baseball scout for the California Angels, and his life’s work is in jeopardy as the team’s new owner, Gil Lawrence, pushes to overhaul the farm system and trim the scouts. For years, he hasn’t unearthed a truly standout prospect, leaving him wary but hopeful that his eye for talent still works.

One night, a breakdown on a rural road forces him and his girlfriend Bobbie off the highway, a detour that leads them to a country boy named Sammy Bodeen whose pitching arm hints at major-league potential. Back in Anaheim, skepticism surrounds the discovery, but Virgil convinces the powers that be to give Sammy a chance with a formal tryout.

At first, Sammy is wild, and the prospect of a breakthrough seems almost too good to be true—a big joke in the making.
