Echo Score

The Movie Echo Score

44

Take Cover delivers competent martial‑arts set pieces but is undermined by a thin script and uneven execution, resulting in a film that feels more like a fan service filler than a cohesive cinematic experience. Positive notes focus on the energy of the fight choreography and occasional entertaining moments, while criticism centers on predictable plotting, weak character development, and several implausible plot choices. The net impression is that the movie offers limited appeal beyond dedicated Scott Adkins followers.

While keeping a vigilant eye on their significant target from a rooftop, sniper Sam Lorde and his spotter Ken find themselves embroiled in a weighty discussion about the existence of God. In a dramatic turn of events, as Sam readies himself for the perfect shot, destiny takes a cruel twist when his bullet inadvertently strikes the girlfriend of the target instead. With a heavy heart, he successfully eliminates the primary target with a second shot. The two men then retreat back home, but the shadows of regret linger as Sam grapples with the consequences of his actions. Unfortunately, Ken remains unmoved by Sam’s remorse, staunchly believing they’re simply doing their duty as good government soldiers.

After some reflection, Sam opts for retirement and discusses it with his superior, Tamara, who convinces him to accept one last high-stakes assignment in Frankfurt. Upon their arrival in the vibrant city, tensions rise as Ken expresses dissatisfaction about the prospect of retiring. In a surprising gesture, they are led into a luxurious penthouse, an extravagant gift arranged by Tamara, which leaves Ken in a state of disbelief. Feeling uneasy in such lavish surroundings, Sam requests that the manager draw the curtains, unaware of the impending danger that lurks just beyond them.

The plot thickens when a fortune teller, Mona, reads their palms, foreshadowing the chaos to come. Just as the manager arrives with food, Sam notices a glimmer of sniper’s glass from a nearby building. Instinctively, he shouts for everyone to take cover, but chaos erupts as a sniper opens fire. In the ensuing melee, Sam attempts to close the curtains but finds himself confronted by the manager, who reveals himself as a skilled ninja assassin. In an intense showdown, Sam dispatches both the manager and another assassin, proving his formidable skills.

Desperate for help, Ken seizes Lily’s phone and contacts Tamara to request backup. However, the situation deteriorates rapidly when the sniper takes aim at Ken, wounding him fatally as he is flung out of the apartment window. Tamara, revealing her own treacherous intentions, had orchestrated this chaos, wishing to eliminate Sam before he could turn rogue in his retirement. In a fight for survival, Sam battles through a swarm of assassins and snipers, claiming victory, but not without deep losses. Tragically, Lily is killed during this tumult, and Sam confronts Tamara, who reveals her twisted satisfaction as she orchestrates the violence from afar.

Amidst the bloodshed, Sam and Mona fight valiantly to stay alive, utilizing their combined wits and the limited resources at their disposal. Mona selflessly sacrifices herself, urging Sam to look after her 8-year-old daughter, a heart-wrenching plea that underlines the stakes they face. As Ken regains consciousness, he realizes time is running out and urges Sam to save himself, tapping into their history to strategize an escape. The chaos culminates when Sam cleverly dismantles a drone sent by Tamara, a display of cunning that showcases his skills and determination for retribution.

Eventually, Sam inches closer to his goal, and as he prepares for a final confrontation, he reaches out to Tamara from the airport, where she awaits her flight to Dubai. Their banter underscores the bitter conflicts and moral dilemmas they’ve faced, leading Sam to explain the concept of karmic retribution—a notion Tamara scoffs at. In a climactic twist of fate, Sam, aided by the young daughter, manages to exact revenge on Mona in a moment shrouded in tragedy and dark irony. As he exits with the child, he clings to a fragile hope that perhaps his path toward redemption might now be in the hands of someone truly innocent.
