On an island where animal-plant hybrids live side by side, a curious young Pookoo named Ollie Michael B. Jordan grows up amid warnings from his parents and his grandmother about a once-harmonious valley shaped by ancient guardians called the Dzo. The Dzo gifted magical pods that let creatures change form and understand one another better. But a ruthless Treewolf stole a pod that granted fire, transforming into the fearsome Firewolf, and sparked a forest blaze that fractured the valley. The disaster left a mighty dam blocking the river, scattered Dzo, and separated communities that began to live apart from their neighbors.

Ollie’s world widens when he meets a hatchling from the green bird-like Javans. The Javan calls to her flock, and Ollie learns how to forage from Ivy Juno Temple. As Ivy and her sisters Violet Ambika Mod and Lily Lolly Adefope navigate the island, Ollie’s curiosity leads to trouble: he uses glass shards to drive the Javans away, only to be attacked by a Javan and fall into a hole where a pod awaits, attaching to him and transforming him into a Javan himself.

Fleeing the initial danger, Ollie is rescued by Ivy, who had attacked him earlier, along with her sisters Violet and Lily. A grouper-like fish named Boogle Tracy Morgan reveals there is a pod on a nearby dead Dzo. Hope flickers as Ollie, now temporarily a Javan, tries to reach it, but Ivy interferes—only to be turned into a Pookoo herself. Boogle shares news of another pod near The Great Waterfall, and the unlikely duo sets off across the valley. Along their journey they encounter a spectrum of creatures—Treewolves, Root Snakes, Rock Bears—learning each species’ strengths and limitations. Ollie also discovers that Ivy brought her flock to Ollie’s island because their own food sources at Javan Rock were dwindling, a truth that complicates their alliance.

They reach the pod, and Boogle promises to bring it to Ollie so he can transform into something on land. But Ollie hesitates to trust Ivy, and a clash sends them into a new form—fish. Boogle then reveals he knows where to find more pods, and the pair press on to locate them. When they finally unlock the pods and revert, a shocking revelation follows: Boogle is the Firewolf, the valley’s ancient disruptor, who was transformed by the Dzo into a fish to thwart him. The Firewolf destroys the remaining pods and gravely injures Ivy, forcing Ollie to drag her to her Javan Rock for care.

With Ivy on the mend, the danger to the valley becomes clear: the only safe refuge is the island. Ollie reconciles with his father, Caloo Cedric the Entertainer, and urges him to trust the other creatures despite old wounds. As the Firewolf closes in, Ollie returns to the hole where he first fell, where cobwebs link to a dead Dzo. The spirit of that Dzo pleads for Ollie to send him a pod, and Ollie uses it to transform into a Dzo himself. In the ensuing battle, Ollie battles the Firewolf and the dam is shattered, washing both adversaries away.

The valley grieves for Ollie, but the returning Dzo spirits reveal that he is alive, having switched back to his Pookoo form. Peace gradually settles over the land as the Pookoo and Javans begin to reconnect, sharing their knowledge and strengths. The island becomes a new crossroads of harmony, where former rivals work together to protect their home and neighbors, and Ollie’s brave journey becomes a bridge between two once-separated communities.
