Haley Bennett as Hunter Conrad, a young woman from a lower-working-class background, has just married Austin Stowell as Richie Conrad, a man from a wealthy family who is poised to take over as CEO of his father’s Manhattan corporation. This status allows Hunter to stay at home in their lavish upstate New York house, yet the environment feels stifling to her. She grows emotionally isolated in both her marriage and domestic routine, while Richie remains distant and often oblivious to her needs. At a festive dinner meant to celebrate the pregnancy, she begins to tell a story but is cut off when her father‑in‑law zones out and redirects the conversation toward business.

One day, alone in the house, Hunter experiences an unsettling impulse to eat a marble, and the sensation proves addictive. The urge expands into a pattern of consuming other inedible objects—thumbtacks, metal figurines, batteries—an escalating compulsion that upends her sense of self. During a routine ultrasound, technicians spot an anomaly in her abdomen and she is rushed into emergency surgery to remove a variety of objects stranded in her intestine. She is diagnosed with pica, a psychological condition that drives people to ingest nonfood items. To help, Richie’s parents arrange for her to see a psychiatrist in the city, Elise Santora as Dr. Reyes, who begins to untangle the layers of Hunter’s distress.

Richie hires Laith Nakli as Luay, a trusted family friend from Syria, to monitor Hunter while he’s at work. At first, Hunter clashes with Luay, seeing him as an intruder, and Luay dismisses the illness as a product of her protected life. In therapy, Hunter reveals a painful background: she was not raised by her biological father and has never met him, though she knows his name and keeps a photo. She explains that she was conceived from her mother’s rape by a man she met in a bar, and that the rapist later served time in prison. Panicking, she swallows a miniature screwdriver. Luay finds her choking and calls 9‑1‑1, and she undergoes another surgery to remove the tool. Michael and Katherine decide to commit Hunter to a psychiatric hospital for the next seven months until she delivers the baby, effectively threatening that Richie will divorce her if she refuses. Luay, who has begun to care for her, helps her slip away by staging it as an escape.

Hunter hitchhikes to a motel, where she phones Richie. He pleads for her to return, but she explains that she entered the marriage and pregnancy to make him happy and that this is no longer enough. When he insults her, she breaks her phone and spends the night alone, passively watching television and gathering dirt from the yard to quietly consume. The next day, she hitches a ride to her biological father’s home, where Denis O’Hare as William Erwin is celebrating his birthday with family. William and his wife Lucy—played by Luna Lauren Vélez—assume Hunter is the parent of a friend of their daughter, but Hunter reveals her true identity in a private moment with William.

William’s reaction is complicated: he expresses shame for the past crime that binds their family, and Hunter asks him bluntly whether he is ashamed of her or if she is like him. William denies it, leaving Hunter with a difficult but necessary sense of closure. Afterward, she seeks medical help to end the pregnancy and takes abortion medication in a busy food court; the procedure unfolds in a public restroom, leaving her alone with the consequences and the uncertain path ahead.

Throughout this emotional and unsettling journey, Hunter confronts the expectations of wealth, marriage, and motherhood while trying to reclaim her voice and autonomy.
