A murder disrupts a quiet urban block, and the police find themselves blocked by an airtight alibi for the principal suspect, leaving the investigation with more questions than answers.

Yasuko Hanaoka is a divorced, single mother who runs a small restaurant, her days split between tending the kitchen and looking after her teenage daughter, Misato Hanaoka. Across the wall lives a reclusive yet brilliant mathematics teacher, Tetsuya Ishigami, whose quiet routine includes morning exchanges with Yasuko as he buys lunch from her cafe. Their brief, courteous chats become the bright thread in his otherwise solitary life, hinting at a surprising warmth that lies beneath his stoic exterior. The pair’s world shifts when Yasuko’s abusive ex-husband, Shinji Togashi, makes a late-night appearance to threaten her for money, an ominous prelude that escalates into violence inside Yasuko’s apartment. In the heat of the confrontation, Togashi is killed by Yasuko and her daughter, a moment that changes everything. Ishigami, who overhears the commotion from his room, steps in with a chilling calm: he offers his help, not only disposing of the body but also guiding the cover-up with precision and care, step by step.

When the body is discovered and identified, Yasuko quickly falls under suspicion. The investigation brings in the competent detectives, Kaoru Utsumi and her superior Shumpei Kusanagi, who recognize the need for expert insight beyond ordinary police work. They seek the help of Professor Manabu Yukawa, a brilliant scientist whose reputation for detachment in solving cases is renowned. Initially, Yukawa refuses to involve himself because the case lies outside his field of physics, and he prefers to let the evidence speak for itself. Yet the turn of events—he learns that his former classmate Tetsuya Ishigami is Yasuko’s neighbor—moves him to reconsider. A reunion with Ishigami rekindles a respect and curiosity that had been dormant, and Yukawa decides to look more closely at the clues.

What follows is a high-stakes game of wits as Ishigami and Yukawa try to outthink each other while protecting Yasuko. Ishigami aims to shield the woman he has grown to care for, leveraging his profound logic to stay a step ahead of Yukawa’s methodical reasoning. Yukawa, in turn, brings his sharp intellect to bear on the case, probing possibilities and uncovering threads that challenge Ishigami’s carefully laid plans. The tension between them builds into a tense duel, each move carefully calculated to advance or derail the other, all while the truth about what happened is kept just out of reach of those who would prosecute Yasuko.

Ultimately, Yukawa cracks the case, but the revelation comes with a painful truth: the outcome serves the police but does little to repair the damage done to the people involved. The solution exposes a moral cost that weighs heavily on Yukawa, who is known for his cool, almost clinical detachment. This time, the resolution unsettles him, underscoring a rare, personal response to a case that tests not only his intellect but his humanity. In the end, the drama centers on the consequences of protecting loved ones, the boundaries between truth and justice, and the emotional toll of solving a mystery that impacts more than one family.
