In this lighthearted comedy-drama, Charlie McCready, Bob Crane tries to wrestle his daughter Wendy McCready, Kathleen Cody away from her carefree circle of childhood friends, especially her boyfriend Bart. He makes a few earnest attempts to bridge the generation gap, like joining his daughter’s beach volleyball games and trying his hand at water skiing, but each effort ends in a series of embarrassing mishaps that underline their different worlds.

Late in the summer, Wendy McCready receives a letter that supposedly grants her a full scholarship to Huntington College, the same alma mater as her parents. Unbeknownst to her, the letter is fake: Charlie has paid the first year’s tuition himself and arranged for a friend at Huntington to send the notice so she will not attend City College with Bart and her other friends. The deception sets the stage for a clash between loyalties and generations.

Charlie later visits Wendy at Huntington and discovers that the campus has changed considerably since his own days there. Wendy, realizing the ruse, leans into the campus counterculture as a way to get back at him. In a turn of romantic unforeseen, she becomes engaged to a hippie artist named Klutch. Charlie’s attempt to intervene escalates into a tense fistfight with Klutch, drawing in Bart, who comes to Wendy’s defense.

The story twists further as Charlie reveals a truth Bart has been keeping: Bart had turned down a Huntington College scholarship to be near Wendy, whom he believed had not been granted one. The revelation reframes the earlier family conflicts and underscores the film’s themes of love, ambition, and the tug of two very different eras.

In the end, Wendy marries Bart, signaling a blend of parental concern, youthful idealism, and undeniable affection. Their union closes a chapter on generational friction and hints at a future where old beliefs and new ideas can coexist, even if the road there is paved with missteps, memories, and a few memorable escapades.
