Alan O’Black is an aspiring stand-up comic who takes on a job as a limousine driver to prove to his girlfriend Julie Preston that he can be a responsible adult. Despite landing a steady gig and contending with a string of odd passengers, he keeps his stand-up routine close to his heart, rehearsing jokes at every turn and meeting strange situations with good-natured aplomb. He and his buddy Jay Neilson become entangled in the shady dealings of businessman Bradley Z. Coleman, which launches a hectic chase through Los Angeles with both the police and underworld figures on their tails.
The pursuit reaches a fever pitch when he loses Bradley at a busy galleria, prompting him to return just as he is about to perform a set at the Laff Track. His girlfriend Julie Preston, who had followed him, also ends up under threat as mobsters close in. In an attempt to dodge danger, they try to blend in at a funeral at Inglewood Park Cemetery, only to end up among the mourners after an accident that costs Alan his limousine and his job. They manage to make it back to the Laff Track in time for his routine, and Bradley reveals that his goods were acquired legitimately through an inheritance and would be donated before the IRS moved to seize them.
During the performance, Alan nervously notices the mobsters who had been chasing him and the stolen limo in the crowd, triggering a tense brawl that the quartet — Alan, Julie, Jay, and Bradley — narrowly survives. In the aftermath, Alan secures a meeting with network executives who had seen his act, hoping to propel his career forward. When the police arrive on the scene, Alan identifies the men they were after, and one of them tries to shift blame onto a partner. Later, he opens up to Julie about Bradley’s dealings, including Bradley’s decision to stash the goods at the post office between the funeral and the show for safekeeping. The story resolves with a hopeful note as Alan and Julie share a kiss, signaling a possible new start.
