Frank Thompson awakens in the middle of a New York City street as debris rains down from a building collapse, narrowly missing him and leaving him disoriented in the aftermath. The city around him feels unfamiliar, and he soon learns that his apartment has been rented out for a year while his wife, Virginia Thompson, has been living somewhere else without him.
He confronts Virginia, who is stunned to see the husband who disappeared without explanation a year earlier. As Frank Thompson pieces together the fragments of his past, it becomes clear that he is known by another name and is fleeing from a murder he cannot remember committing. A persistent detective, Joe Marruci, shadows his every move, turning every street corner and encounter into a potential trap.
Seeking answers in the neighborhood where he woke, Frank meets Ruth Dillon, who knows him only as “Danny.” Ruth escorts him to the mansion of the wealthy Diedrich family, where she has been employed as a servant. The family’s matriarch, Grandma Diedrich, is a housebound invalid who is mute, yet she holds the key to what happened that night. Through sign language, Frank/Danny learns from her that Ruth is the killer—Harry had caught her stealing, a confession that changes everything he thought he knew.
With danger closing in, a tense confrontation and a deadly struggle unfold, and Joe Marruci arrives to tie up loose ends and bring the real story to light. The truth about Frank’s past and the people around him threatens to upend the life he’s trying to reclaim, leaving him to navigate memory, motive, and peril in a city that never stops watching.
