Sternenberg 2004

Franz Engi, Mathias Gnädinger returns after thirty years to his hometown Sternenberg, a small, isolated village in the Töss Valley. He finds the primary school at risk of closing because there are only a handful of students, a situation that would cost the village its teacher and its daily heartbeat.

Eva Joos, Sara Capretti is his daughter and the teacher at the school. She has long-claimed that her father never cared for his family and she does not want to meet him. Her stance creates a personal obstacle for Franz, who is carrying a secret that could change everything.

To save the school and reach out to Eva, Franz hatches an unusual plan: he enrolls as a student and pretends that he had not attended school as a child, invoking his right to education. The gambit is designed to bring in enough students to keep the school open and to secure ongoing funding, a practical solution to a community in need. He joins the classroom, walking beside the same kids he once might have taught, blending in with their routine and challenges.

Eva’s initial response is cool and distant, dismissive of this unorthodox move. Yet as Franz participates in lessons, missing connections begin to surface, and a tentative bridge forms between the estranged father and daughter. The story unfolds with a gentle, observational tone as the town watches the experiment unfold, and as the two of them navigate the delicate path from estrangement to possible reconciliation.

In the end, the scheme appears to succeed: the school meets its minimum enrollment and continues to receive funding, preserving a place for education in Sternenberg. More importantly, the experience nudges Eva to reassess her feelings about her father, opening a path, however slow, toward reconciliation and a renewed sense of belonging for both of them.
