Miyuki, an eight‑year‑old living only with her father Ryoichi after her mother’s death, meets Akiko, the woman Ryoichi plans to marry. Akiko uses her business savvy to win Miyuki’s affection, but fails. Ryoichi’s attempts to reason with his daughter are likewise ineffective, so Akiko turns to Shimoyama, a neighbor who knows Miyuki well, hoping to gain her trust.
