In 1942, while awaiting orders after being discharged from the hospital, German Lieutenant Gerd Wisse arranges for a pretty but desperate Russian woman named Katja to secure a job, so she can avoid deportation to Germany.
Wisse is sent to serve as a liaison officer with a Romanian division near Stalingrad, where another German officer, Major Linkmann, is stationed but not under his command. The Romanian force, under General Codreanu, fears the worst: its front is sprawling (19 km instead of the usual 5–6), it is poorly equipped, and reserves are scarce after months of fighting. Reports warn that the Russians are planning something major.
Soon after Wisse arrives, the Red Army launches attacks to the north and south of Stalingrad, breaking through and encircling the Germans who retreat into the city. The Romanian division is driven east into the pocket as well. During the retreat, [Linkmann] tries to flee but is stopped by Wisse. Later, Wisse coerces a sergeant into ignoring orders to burn down a supply depot; he allows soldiers to carry off food and other supplies without restriction, and only then torches the depot to deny it to the approaching Soviets.
Despite the dire situation, Hitler refuses to permit a breakout. The Luftwaffe can barely supply the trapped troops—20% at first, then less, and finally nothing—as airfields fall to the Soviets. [Linkmann] is reassigned to command an artillery unit in Stalingrad.
Hoth attempts to reach the encircled troops with his panzer group, but Field Marshal Paulus remains loyal to Hitler’s order to stand fast, despite pleas to break out. The situation forces Hoth to withdraw when the Soviets breach the flanks of the Italian 8th Army, leaving the German front in a precarious hold.
In Stalingrad, Wisse comes under Linkmann’s command, and the relationship between the two officers grows tense as hunger and fear erode morale among the soldiers. Wisse is pursued by the Soviets, so he disguises himself as a Russian soldier. He stumbles into a group of Russians being fed and, there, meets Katja again. She does not betray him and guides him back toward German lines. Meanwhile, Linkmann attempts to desert and is ultimately shot dead by Wisse.
As the siege tightens, Paulus orders his men to fight to the last man, but the retreating German forces ultimately surrender. Wisse and roughly 90,000 other survivors trudge into captivity, marking the grim end of the stand at Stalingrad.
