In the vast expanse of space, Czech astronaut Jakub Prochazka (Adam Sandler) has been floating solo for six arduous months, tasked with investigating the mysterious cloud of particles known as Chopra, which appeared four years prior and lies beyond Jupiter's gravitational pull. As he navigates his spacecraft, Jakub's thoughts are consumed by his wife, Lenka (Carey Mulligan), who had recently severed ties with him due to his departure for the mission, leaving behind their unborn daughter. The weight of his loneliness is further exacerbated by the malfunctioning toilet, which disrupts his already fragile sleep patterns.

As tensions build, Jakub's commanding officer, Commissioner Tuma (Isabella Rossellini), intercepts Lenka's desperate message, opting to shield Jakub from her impending decision to leave him, fearing it would shatter his already tenuous grip on mental stability. Meanwhile, Peter, Jakub's friend and confidant, is aware of Lenka's intentions but chooses not to disclose this information to Jakub, instead offering hollow reassurances that she has only gone to visit her mother.

Days later, as Jakub remains disconnected from the world he once knew, a peculiar encounter takes place within the recesses of his spacecraft. A spider-like creature with extraordinary telepathic abilities, whom Jakub dubs Hanus (Paul Dano), emerges from a compartment. Initially wary, Jakub locks himself in the airlock and releases decontaminants, but to no avail; Hanus remains impervious. The enigmatic creature assures Jakub of its peaceful intentions, seeking to understand humanity better and alleviate his crippling loneliness.

As Jakub gradually warms up to Hanus's presence, he begins to confide in this extraterrestrial visitor about his existential struggles. Hanus, an explorer who has traversed galaxies and black holes, reveals that it fled its home planet after a devastating attack by the Gorompeds. This peculiar pair forms an unlikely bond, with Hanus expressing a yearning for eggs – a culinary pleasure that Jakub cannot provide due to preservation concerns.

Despite the vast chasm between their worlds, Hanus's stories of interstellar travel and Jakub's experiences in space create an eerie sense of connection, as if they are two lost souls, bound together by the cosmos.

As Hanus delves into the memories of Jakub (played by), he uncovers a rich tapestry of experiences that paint a vivid picture of the astronaut's past. The recollections reveal a complex individual shaped by his father's tumultuous involvement with the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, whose untimely demise had a profound impact on Jakub's formative years. Raised to tend pigs, Jakub's aspirations were forever altered when he met Lenka, only to have his priorities shift toward becoming a cosmonaut, ultimately leaving Lenka behind, even in the face of her devastating miscarriage.

As Hanus continues to explore Jakub's memories, he becomes increasingly fascinated by the astronaut's apparent inability to reconcile his past and present. The decision to leave his home planet, despite the destructive nature of space to him, can be attributed to a desire to atone for his father's sins and complete this mission successfully.

The arrival of a mysterious grain from the Chopra cloud, 45 hours away, sets off a chain reaction that will alter the trajectory of events. As Jakub struggles to comprehend the enigmatic substance, he loses all contact with the outside world until the grain is safely within his spacecraft.

In a poignant turn of events, Hanus imparts an implanted memory of Lenka's miscarriage to Jakub, only to be met with disappointment and disillusionment as he witnesses Jakub's continued neglect. This time, however, Hanus departs the ship, leaving Jakub distraught.

With Peter (Kunal Nayyar), his trusted technician and friend, Jakub arranges for a message of apology and forgiveness to be delivered to Lenka. When Hanus returns, bearing grave news of a parasitic infection that has ravaged his entire species, the two space travelers find themselves on the cusp of a profound journey.

Upon arriving at the mystical Chopra cloud, which holds within it the essence of every moment in time, Jakub is faced with an existential crisis. The realization that he yearns only to be reunited with Lenka ultimately becomes his guiding principle as he confronts the reality of Hanus's impending demise.

As the dust settles, Jakub finds himself picked up by a South Korean space vessel, where he is finally reunited with Lenka, allowing them to come to terms with their complex relationship and find closure in a universe full of mysteries.
