South Park: Post COVID 2021

Forty years into the future, the COVID-19 pandemic is waning. Stan Marsh has moved away from South Park, Colorado, works as an online whiskey consultant, and coexists with a sentient, nagging Amazon Alexa. Stan receives a call from Kyle Broflovski, now the guidance counselor at South Park Elementary, who informs him that Kenny McCormick has died.

Kenny had been a scientist exploring the origins of COVID-19 and the possibility of a cure. He had hinted that, if he died, his closest friends would know where to find his missing data by retracing their steps. Stan heads back to South Park to pay his respects and to consider reconnecting with Kyle, though he resists the notion of actively searching for Kenny’s data. At Kenny’s wake, Stan runs into many former classmates and finds that the town’s rhythm has shifted in his absence. Eric Cartman, now a rabbi who has converted to Judaism, is there with his own family, much to Kyle’s skeptical amusement. The gathering also includes Wendy Testaburger and her husband, Darwin, along with Tweek Tweak and Craig Tucker, and Jimmy Valmer, who has become a late-night talk show host. Token Black is there in a law enforcement role, and Clyde Donovan is present as well. Stan slips away from the crowd and watches a news report that mentions a new COVID-19 variant bearing Kenny’s notes, signaling deeper trouble.

At Kenny’s funeral, Stan’s anger flares, feeling betrayed by Kyle’s insistence that he visit his father, Randy. As Stan leaves, a scientist confirms Kenny’s death was tied to a new COVID-19 variant, triggering a city-wide quarantine that binds everyone into a school-based refuge. With the shelter at capacity, Cartman’s family is allowed to stay with Kyle, intensifying old tensions.

The pandemic’s shadow lingers over Stan’s family. Following the upheaval, Randy’s estranged wife Sharon had filed for divorce; Randy refuses to relinquish control of Tegridy Farms, leading to relentless bickering. In a moment of destructive frustration, Stan burns down the farm, unaware that his sister Shelley Marsh is inside the barn. Shelley’s death devastates Stan and accelerates the rift with Randy. The adults’ feud spills into a larger confession: Randy admits his responsibility for the chaos, while Stan discovers that he and Kenny adopted similar shortcuts in the past—Kenny had apparently hidden his data in a similar way and hidden it within the privacy of their lives.

In the meantime, Token, Craig, Tweek (unlinked here for narrative focus), Wendy, Jimmy, and Clyde try to locate Kenny’s data on their own. They attempt to reach Kenny’s only surviving associate, Victor Chouce, but find he’s institutionalized. Clyde refuses to be vaccinated, complicating their plan to visit the asylum. The group uncovers Kenny’s secret laboratory inside the school, revealing that his work had progressed toward time travel in an attempt to stop the pandemic from ever taking hold.

Stan, Kyle, and Cartman eventually visit the morgue to recover Kenny’s flash drive from his rectum, then reunite with their friends at the school. The drive contains a video of Kenny’s time-travel experiment, in which a colleague explains that the trio’s actions helped drive them apart and contributed to the dystopian future. Kenny briefly disappears after contracting COVID-19, but returns, his resolve strengthened by the experience. The friends resolve to complete Kenny’s work, with Cartman initially volunteering to help out of concern for his family but ultimately fleeing with them, unwilling to accept any change to the future. Meanwhile, Randy discovers a small marijuana sprout and vows to protect it—an ironic thread linking back to Tegridy Farms’ complex legacy. At the asylum, a revealing clue—“Chouce” as a mispronunciation of “Chaos”—points to a familiar face: Butters Stotch.

The story unfolds as a meditation on friendship, responsibility, and the choices that shape a shared future, weaving together grief, science, and a stubborn hope that a different path might still be forged.
