Sound! Euphonium the Movie – May the Melody Reach You! 2017

In a story that threads memory and present tension, a young Hazuki Katou, Ayaka Asai, receives a euphonium in the past from someone named Shindō. Fast forward to the present, after Kitauji High School Concert Band clinches a victory at the Kansai band competition, the group performs during their school’s cultural festival, inviting a moment of pride and a hint of fatigue from hard-won success. It is during this time that Kumiko Ōmae, Tomoyo Kurosawa, begins to sense a quiet but growing facade behind Asuka Tanaka’s usually sunny persona, a tension that quietly gnaws at the harmony of the band.

As the team prepares for bigger stages, the band heads into a training camp to gear up for the national competition. There, Noboru Taki, Takahiro Sakurai, announces an upcoming concert held in an open area near a train station, a decision that sets the stage for new pressures and public scrutiny. Kumiko, ever observant, eventually discovers Asuka and her mother in the faculty room, where the latter is pushing Mr. Taki toward accepting Asuka’s resignation so she can focus on her college entrance exams. Rumors of Asuka quitting ripple through the band, and Haruka Ogasawara, Saori Hayami, who serves as band president, calls on everyone to rally around Asuka and show their support.

On the day of the station concert, Asuka arrives and joins the band in performing the piece Takarajima, signaling a fragile return to participation. Yet after this moment, Asuka attends band practice only sporadically. The tension deepens when Mr. Taki reveals that Asuka may be replaced by another euphonist, Natsuki Nakagawa, Conomi Fujimura, if she cannot commit to the group by the end of the week. This looming possibility pushes Kumiko to bridge gaps between the two worlds: she visits Asuka at home for tutoring on her midterm, and through their visit Kumiko learns that Asuka is the daughter of the renowned euphonist Masakazu Shindō, whose reputation casts a long shadow because her father is set to judge at the nationals.

A quiet riverbank walk becomes a turning point, as Asuka invites Kumiko to listen to a piece her father composed, a moment that stirs Kumiko’s curiosity and doubt about her own choices. At school, Kumiko overhears Asuka’s decision to concentrate on the entrance exam with the help of a mock exam, but she pleads with Asuka to reconsider so that she does not look back with regret. Despite this plea, Asuka remains determined to continue playing with the band, using the mock exam as leverage to advocate for her path.

The nationals arrive, and Kitauji High School Concert Band takes the stage to perform the piece Crescent Moon Dance. The performance earns them a bronze medal, a result that brings a mix of pride and disappointment. After the graduation of the third-year students, Kumiko and Asuka share one final moment. Asuka then entrusts her father’s notebook to Kumiko, who discovers within it that the riverbank piece she heard is titled Sound! Euphonium, revealing a thread that ties their shared journey together.
