On a cold winter evening, a young Boy and Girl in ragged clothes pull a wagon through town, gathering firewood. They pass by the glow of merchants’ shops and pause to admire the confectioneries in the bakery, the air sweet with sugar and spice as the warm scent lingers in their memories for a moment. A friendly Baker sees the children, steps out, and returns with cupcakes for them, but they have already left, leaving the baker with a quiet smile and a wish to help.
The children reach their rundown home and sit down to supper consisting of hard bread and flat water. The boy says he is still hungry. Their mother, unable to provide more food, begins to cry, at which the boy comforts her with a gentle reassurance, and she kisses them goodnight. They change into their nighties, and they each sing a part of a song as they fall asleep beneath their tattered sheets, the soft voices mixing with the creak of the old house and the sigh of the winter wind outside.
In their sleep, they enter Dreamland, a fantastical realm that feels wonderfully close to the edge of reality. They happily frolic through the wondrous land, which includes a merry-go-round cake, fields that grow ice cream cones and popcorn, toys that come to life, nice clothes that twirl in the air, and two luxurious beds awaiting them in a glow of comforting light. They skip and laugh, savoring the magic, then lie down on the plush beds, only to awaken back in their own shabby bedroom, the morning light still thin through the curtains.
To their surprise, a large feast appears on the kitchen table, as well as toys and clothing surrounding the room, all of which is provided by the merchants who had watched over them— the baker, the tailor, and the market owner. The children look up to the trio, asking twice if all these things are really for them. The merchants nod in affirmation, their eyes warm with generosity. The children cry out with joy and begin to eat, the boy still a touch wary of such sudden luck and testing his fate by sticking a fork in his bottom to see if he is dreaming. The moment feels both magical and sincere, and the family shares a quiet laughter as the room fills with the quiet clatter of plates and the soft, hopeful chatter of the children, and the cartoon closes.
