Stevie, a meticulous 12-year-old, struggles with the chaos of her younger brother Elliot, an aspiring magician whose energy tests the fabric of their family life. Their home, once warm, is now cracking under the pressure of looming divorce as Mom contemplates a move to Duluth for a steady teaching job, while Dad clings to his dream of a rock musician’s life in the same old town. In a bid to restore what they’ve lost, Stevie and Elliot stumble upon a mysterious book, The Legend of the Sandman, which promises that a wish can be granted if they can find the Sandman in the dream world. Driven by love for their family and a desire to fix the fraying edges of their reality, they perform a ritual and drift into sleep together, stepping into a realm that defies the rules of their waking world.

Inside the dream world, the siblings discover they are “Lucid Dreamers” who can shape elements of the landscape as long as they hold hands and stay focused. They are joined by Baloney Tony, a smelly, wisecracking stuffed giraffe who comes to life and becomes a quirky ally on their journey. To reach the Sandman, they traverse surreal landscapes drawn from their own subconscious—places like Breakfast Town, where food behaves with a life of its own and nightmares arrive in the form of toothy perils and impossible tests. Throughout their odyssey, they are hunted by Nightmara, the terrifying Queen of Nightmares, whose goal is to wake them so they can be dragged back into the waking world.

The quest leads them to the Sandman’s castle, where a shocking twist awaits: the Sandman is not the benevolent figure they expected. Instead, he offers dreamers a perpetual fantasy life that never ends, a trap that leaves them sleeping forever so he can feed on their dreams. He tempts Stevie with a flawless version of her life—one in which her parents are happy and, crucially, where Elliot never existed. Tempted by this glossy paradise, Stevie risks leaving her body comatose in the real world. But Elliot resists the lure and teams up with Nightmara, who is revealed not merely as a fearsome antagonist but as a tough-love mentor tasked with waking children to face their real problems and grow.

In a climactic turn, Elliott maneuvers into Stevie’s fantasy to pull her back, and Stevie comes to see that a world devoid of her brother feels empty and hollow.
