In a tense early crime drama, the Hansen family waits for news of their kidnapped son. A ransom of $200,000 arrives by messenger, and FBI agents advise paying with marked bills to trace the criminals, though fear keeps the family from acting.
Meanwhile, Joe Martin, Edward Norris and Loretta Martin, Rochelle Hudson, with their baby Trudy and their dog, are driving through a heavy storm when their car gets stuck in mud. They seek shelter in a nearby house that seems abandoned but is stocked with fresh food and clothing. The four kidnappers Tobey, Cesar Romero as Tobey, Pitch, Bruce Cabot as Pitch, Buzz, Edward Brophy as Buzz, and Gimp, Warren Hymer as Gimp, return to this house—their hideout—having collected the ransom money and releasing the boy.
Tobey decides to let the Martins stay the night, hoping they’ll leave quietly, but the family quickly realizes who the men are and are taken prisoner. The gang tests the ransom by forcing Loretta and Trudy to be held hostage while Joe goes into town with Tobey to spend some of the bills, checking if the money is marked. A drunk and impatient Pitch plans to kill Loretta and Trudy, but Tobey and Joe return from town just in time to stop him.
As a radio broadcast confirms that every bill of the ransom is marked, the Martins’ dog picks up a marked bill and runs off. Pitch shoots the dog in frustration; Tobey plans to lie low at the house with the imprisoned Martins while the others go their separate ways.
Pitch and Buzz pay with a marked bill at a gas station, and are chased by police, which ends with Buzz shot dead and Pitch winged by a bullet. Gimp tries to buy a streetcar ticket but is spotted by police and killed.
The injured dog is taken to a veterinarian by a passing farmer, who finds a marked bill near the dog, allowing the FBI to close in on the hideout. Pitch returns to the house, promises to help Tobey get a fake passport, but double-crosses and kills him. Pitch then breaks into the room where the Martins are being held, and Joe fights Pitch, giving Loretta the chance to grab a gun and shoot Pitch just before he can kill Joe. The police arrive, and Joe, Loretta and Trudy are safe, while their dog is awarded a bravery medal.
