Kamala, Madhubala and Keshav, Dev Anand, are deeply in love and dream of a life together, but Keshav’s heavy drinking casts a persistent shadow over their future. Their bond feels sturdy and hopeful, and the couple believes love can steer them through any trouble.

On the day of his father’s death, Keshav’s resolve strengthens: he vows not to drink again, and those around him share a cautious optimism. Seeing this change, Kamala’s father slowly warms to the idea of their union, and the family begins to treat the match as a real possibility. The mood is bright, and there is a growing sense that a wedding could finally seal their future together.

Yet fate intercedes three days before the ceremony. Keshav suffers a stomach ache and goes to a local medicine shop. The shopkeeper, lacking an empty bottle of his own, uses an empty rum bottle to dispense the medicine. On the way home, he encounters Kamala, and in the bustle, two drunken men snatch his bottle. He recovers it, but somehow the bottles have been swapped, sowing confusion about what is in his possession.

A further twist comes when, another day, a stomach ache leaves him at the mercy of temptation again. He opens that same bottle and discovers, to his dismay, that it contains alcohol rather than medicine. He cannot resist the pull, and the drink overwhelms him. The truth becomes known to all, and the wedding is canceled once more, casting a pall over their plans.

The couple heads to another city, hoping for a fresh start, but the pattern of drinking intensifies. Kamala’s father dies, leaving her with little choice but to seek out Keshav at his home. She finds him still drinking and not ready to welcome her, and the relationship strains under the burden of his addiction. In a drunken haze, he even triggers a dangerous accident in a coal mine where his mother works, an act that cripples her by taking away both of her feet. The consequences are severe: he ends up in jail, and Kamala waits, enduring the long separation with unwavering faith that he might return and redemption might still be possible.

Throughout this turbulent arc, the story threads together love, temptation, guilt, and endurance, painting a portrait of two lives frayed by addiction yet stubbornly clinging to a chance for reconciliation. Love and loss collide, but the heart’s hope remains as Kamala waits for the man she believes can become worthy of the life they envisioned together.
