On her 18th birthday, Clary Fray is accepted into the Brooklyn Academy of Arts. She celebrates with her best friend, Simon Lewis. As the night unfolds, Clary notices a group of people who seem invisible to everyone else, moving with a tension that sends a chill down her spine. Driven by curiosity, she follows them into the back room of the club and witnesses a brutal confrontation that she cannot explain. When she intervenes and grabs a blade, a rush of fear and adrenaline floods her unease, and she begins to doubt what she knows about the world. Believing she may have unknowingly committed a murder, Clary rushes home in a haze of panic and confusion.
